ProgRESSVet 2018 begins with opening workshop

ProgRESSVet (Programa Regional de Educación Sistemática de Servicios Veterinarios), the online education program of CAHFS and CEBASEV (Centro Buenos Aires para la Capacitación de los Servicios Veterinarios), launched its 2018 program in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on March 8-9, 2018.

The program brings together a new cohort of 11 participants from Veterinary Services of the Latin American region, from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. At the in-person workshop the participants presented their proposed independent research projects, which they will develop throughout the year with guidance from program instructors and regional experts.

Andrés Perez (CAHFS) and Emilio León (CEBASEV), Co-Directors of the program, introduced the participants to the program objectives, courses, and structure, and CAHFS staff Mary Katherine O'Brien, Researcher for Education & Outreach, oriented the participants to the online learning environment and eLearning resources and tools.

One of the program's principal objectives is the creation of a peer network within the Latin American region in order to to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and skills, and thus improve the human resource capacities of the veterinary services. The in-person workshops provide the opportunity for the participants to meet face-to-face with each other and the program directors and staff before continuing with eight months of on-line learning in eight different courses. The participants will reconvene in December 2018 to present their final projects and take a culminating exam.

ProgRESSVet is based upon the OIE's Advanced Competencies for veterinary service professionals, a list of 8 skills and abilities necessary to guarantee National Veterinary Services of quality. "What we're doing with ProgRESSVet is joining one group of people that, throughout a full year, are trained and prepared in these important areas of the advanced competencies," Perez remarked during the workshop.
