When a costly 2015 outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza ripped through the United States, Minnesota farmers found themselves at the forefront. Four years later, CAHFS has continued their commitment to helping the industry to better mitigate and understand avian influenza.
In veterinary school, I was among a handful of peers interested in pursuing nontraditional veterinary career paths. We often rallied our classmates to recognize the application of One Health frameworks in our future careers; we were trained in a unique profession in which we could become advocates for or experts in food safety, regulatory medicine, One Health, ecosystem health, and the human-animal bond even within the walls of a small animal clinical exam room.
As technology automates tedious tasks, enhances scientists’ understanding of biology, and produces extraordinary medical breakthroughs, it’s more important than ever that the training veterinary medicine students receive prepares them for today’s rapidly evolving field.
