The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) shot and killed a bear on April 25th that was found in a residential area of North St. Paul. Conservation officers decided to shoot and kill the bear as they determined the animal posed an immediate safety threat. The bear was a male, estimated at two years old and weighed about 110-120 pounds.

Last week, the Minnesota Board of Animal Health (BAH) announced that a Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) positive deer farm in Crow Wing County was depopulated in the continued effort to manage potential spread to the area’s wild deer. This was the last CWD-positive farm in Minnesota that still had live animals, and as of last week, it is no longer in operation.

Earlier this month, California’s Santa Anita Park held its highly publicized Santa Anita Derby, the west coast’s important prep race on the road to the Kentucky Derby. But, 30,000 thoroughbred racing enthusiasts didn’t just turn out to catch a fleeting glimpse of the $1 million purse winner. They joined media outlets, race stewards, veterinarians, jockeys, and trainers in anxious anticipation of a safe and uneventful race.

On Friday, Indianapolis-based Caito Foods, LLC, issued a voluntary recall of fresh cut melon products in response to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) ongoing investigation of Salmonella Carrau infections. Ninety-three cases have been identified in nine states, including three cases in Minnesota after people ate pre-cut cantaloupe from the same Trader Joe’s store. Twenty-three people have been hospitalized and no deaths have been reported.

On October 8, 2017, a fire broke out in the small town of Calistoga, California at 9:45 p.m. The fire quickly expanded into a blaze that ravaged westward, driven by a wind reported at over 60 miles per hour by 4:00 a.m.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has released a new CWD surveillance and management plan, which explains the threat of CWD in wild deer, elk, and moose populations throughout the state.

The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) released a report in conjunction with the University of Minnesota demonstrating the economic benefits of removing all lead from drinking water infrastructure. The report states the total cost to remove all lead would be just over $4 billion, but the economic and public health benefits would surpass $8 billion.

Since China initially reported its first case of African swine fever (ASF) in August 2018, 28 of the 32 administrative areas in the country have now reported incidences of ASF. Despite the authorities efforts to control the spread of the disease, there has been an average of three new provinces per month reporting outbreaks of ASF.
